Terms of Service
Please read these terms carefully before making a car hire reservation through romecarrent.com.
1. Introduction and Acceptance of Terms
Welcome to romecarrent.com, a car hire comparison and reservation platform serving Rome, the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, and surrounding regions of Lazio, Italy. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the romecarrent.com website, its booking tools, and all related services made available through this platform.
By accessing this website, initiating a search, submitting a reservation request, or completing a booking, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by these Terms in their entirety. If you do not accept these Terms, you must discontinue use of this site immediately.
These Terms apply to all users of romecarrent.com, including visitors who browse without booking, registered account holders, and anyone who completes a vehicle reservation through our platform. References to "we", "us", or "our" refer to romecarrent.com. References to "you" or "user" refer to the individual accessing or using the platform.
We reserve the right to amend these Terms at any time. Significant changes will be communicated via a notice on the website. Continued use of the platform following any update constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. The date of the most recent revision is shown at the bottom of this page.
2. Eligibility Requirements for Car Hire in Rome
To hire a vehicle through romecarrent.com, you must meet the following minimum requirements at the time of pick-up. These criteria exist to comply with Italian road traffic law and the individual policies of our partner suppliers operating in Rome and the wider Lazio region.
Minimum Age Requirements
The minimum rental age for standard economy and compact vehicles is 21 years. Drivers aged 21 to 24 are classified as young drivers and will incur a daily young driver surcharge, which varies by supplier and vehicle category. This surcharge is displayed transparently during the checkout process.
For premium, luxury, convertible, and large SUV categories - including vehicles valued above a threshold set by the individual supplier - the minimum age is typically 25 years. This is consistent with guidelines applied across Rome's major rental locations including Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo da Vinci International Airport) and Ciampino Airport.
There is no universal maximum age restriction, although some suppliers may impose conditions on drivers above a certain age. Any such restriction will be disclosed clearly at the point of selection.
Driving Licence Requirements
All drivers must hold a valid driving licence that has been held for a minimum of one year prior to the rental start date. The licence must be presented in physical form at the pick-up counter; digital or photocopied licences are not accepted by the majority of suppliers in Rome.
Drivers holding a licence issued by a country within the European Union or European Economic Area may drive with their standard national licence. No additional documentation is required under EU mutual recognition rules.
Drivers holding a licence issued outside the EU or EEA - including licences from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and other non-EU jurisdictions - are required to carry a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their national licence. The IDP must be the 1949 or 1968 Vienna Convention format. Suppliers at pick-up locations throughout Rome, including Roma Termini and locations in the EUR and Prati districts, will verify both documents at the counter.
It is the renter's sole responsibility to obtain a valid IDP before travel. Failure to present the required documentation may result in the supplier refusing the rental. romecarrent.com accepts no liability for refusals arising from licence non-compliance.
3. Bookings, Cancellations, and No-Show Policy
Making a Reservation
Reservations are made through the booking search tool on romecarrent.com. Once you submit your booking details and confirm payment or guarantee, you will receive a confirmation email containing your booking reference, hire agreement summary, pick-up instructions, and supplier contact details. This confirmation constitutes a binding reservation subject to these Terms and the individual supplier's rental conditions.
It is your responsibility to review the confirmation email promptly and contact us at info@romecarrent.com if any details are incorrect. Amendments to an existing booking, including changes to pick-up date, time, location, or vehicle category, are subject to availability and may affect pricing.
Free Cancellation Policy
The majority of bookings made through romecarrent.com qualify for free cancellation up to 48 hours before the scheduled pick-up time. The applicable cancellation window is clearly stated on the booking confirmation page and in your confirmation email. Free cancellation means no charges are applied and any prepaid amounts are refunded in full within 5 to 10 business days to the original payment method.
Bookings cancelled within the free cancellation window do not incur any penalty. We encourage travelers to reserve early to secure the best weekly car hire rates and use the free cancellation option if plans change - this is especially useful for travelers coordinating car hire with international flights arriving at Fiumicino or Ciampino.
For bookings that do not qualify for free cancellation (typically late-deal or prepaid non-refundable rates), the cancellation fee will be disclosed prior to confirmation. By completing such a booking, you accept the non-refundable terms.
No-Show Policy
A no-show occurs when a renter fails to collect the vehicle at the agreed pick-up time and location without prior cancellation. In the event of a no-show, the full booking cost may be charged and no refund will be issued. If your flight to Rome is delayed, contact the supplier directly using the details in your confirmation email, or reach us at info@romecarrent.com. Many suppliers at Fiumicino and Ciampino airports apply a grace period for documented flight delays.
4. Pricing, Payment, and Optional Extras
Displayed Currency and Pricing
All prices displayed on romecarrent.com are quoted in Euros (EUR) unless explicitly stated otherwise. Prices are sourced from our supplier network in real time and are subject to change until a booking is confirmed. Once your booking is confirmed, the displayed price is locked and will not increase due to rate fluctuations.
The quoted daily or weekly rate includes the base rental fee and basic insurance coverage (see Section 7 for full insurance details). Airport surcharges, where applicable at Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA) pick-up desks, are shown separately during checkout and are included in the final total before you confirm payment.
What Is Included in the Rate
Standard inclusions across most bookings made through romecarrent.com are: unlimited mileage (where stated), Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), theft protection, and third-party liability insurance as required under Italian law (Legge 990/1969 as subsequently amended). Some shorter-term daily hires may include a mileage allowance in place of unlimited mileage; this will be noted on the vehicle card.
Optional Extras
The following optional extras may be added during the checkout process or, where available, at the pick-up counter. Pricing for each extra is displayed at the time of selection:
- GPS satellite navigation system
- Child seat or infant carrier (suitable age/weight groups specified per product)
- Booster seat for older children
- Additional driver (full licence verification required at counter)
- Wi-Fi hotspot device for mobile connectivity
- Roadside assistance upgrade
- Excess insurance waiver (reduces or eliminates the damage excess)
Pre-booking extras is strongly recommended for popular options such as child seats during peak summer travel to Rome. Availability at the counter is not guaranteed.
Fuel Policy
The fuel policy applicable to your booking is stated clearly on the vehicle listing and in your confirmation. The most common policy is "full-to-full": the vehicle is provided with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank. Failure to return the vehicle with the correct fuel level will result in a refuelling charge levied by the supplier. romecarrent.com does not control supplier refuelling charges, which may include a service fee above the pump rate.
5. Vehicle Use Rules and Prohibited Activities
By accepting a hired vehicle through our platform, you agree to use it only in accordance with these Terms, Italian law, and the supplier's individual rental agreement. Violation of these conditions may result in the immediate termination of your rental, full forfeiture of insurance coverage, and personal liability for all resulting costs.
Permitted Use
Vehicles may be used for ordinary personal transport on public roads in Italy and, where the supplier's agreement explicitly permits, within other European Union member states. Cross-border travel must be declared and approved in writing by the supplier prior to departure. Driving through the ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) zones in central Rome - including areas around the Colosseum, Campo de' Fiori, Trastevere, and Piazza Navona - requires that the vehicle's licence plate be registered for ZTL access, which is the responsibility of the supplier. Confirm ZTL arrangements with your supplier at pick-up to avoid fines issued by Roma Capitale.
Prohibited Activities
The following uses are strictly prohibited and will void insurance coverage and expose the renter to full financial liability:
- Driving the vehicle off public paved roads or on unpaved tracks (off-road use) unless an explicitly off-road-capable rental with appropriate cover has been booked
- Using the vehicle in any form of motor sport, racing, speed testing, or timed driving event
- Subletting, re-hiring, or otherwise transferring the vehicle to any third party not named as an additional driver on the rental agreement
- Operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that impairs driving ability, in violation of Italian Highway Code (Codice della Strada)
- Using the vehicle for the transportation of goods for commercial gain or for hire-and-reward passenger services
- Towing or pushing any trailer, caravan, or other vehicle unless a specific towing package has been confirmed in writing by the supplier
- Smoking inside the vehicle where the supplier's terms prohibit it (a cleaning surcharge may apply)
- Transporting animals unless explicitly permitted by the supplier
6. Insurance and Liability
Basic Coverage Included
All vehicle hire bookings made through romecarrent.com include, as a minimum, the following protections in accordance with mandatory Italian insurance law:
- Third-Party Liability (RC Auto): Compulsory under Italian law, covering bodily injury and property damage caused to third parties.
- Collision Damage Waiver (CDW): Limits the renter's financial exposure in the event of an accident, subject to an excess amount.
- Theft Protection (TP): Reduces the renter's liability in the event of vehicle theft, subject to an excess amount.
The excess amount - the maximum you can be charged in the event of a claim under CDW or TP - is displayed on the vehicle listing and confirmed in your booking summary. Excess amounts for standard vehicles typically range from EUR 500 to EUR 2,000 and are higher for premium or luxury categories.
Optional Full Coverage and Excess Waiver
You may purchase an excess waiver or full coverage upgrade during checkout. This optional product reduces or eliminates the damage excess, and in some packages also extends coverage to include windscreen, tyres, roof, and undercarriage damage - components frequently excluded from standard CDW. We recommend reviewing coverage options carefully, particularly for driving on smaller roads around the Castelli Romani hills or coastal routes south of Rome toward the Amalfi Coast.
Insurance Voidance
All insurance coverage - whether basic or upgraded - is automatically voided in any situation covered under the prohibited activities listed in Section 5, or where the renter has provided false information during the booking process. In such circumstances, the renter bears full personal financial liability for all damages, recovery costs, legal fees, and third-party claims.
7. Limitation of Liability
romecarrent.com operates as a comparison and booking intermediary platform. We facilitate reservations between users and independent vehicle hire suppliers operating across Rome and the Lazio region. We are not a car hire supplier ourselves and do not own, operate, or maintain any of the vehicles listed on this platform.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable Italian and EU consumer protection law, romecarrent.com's liability is limited to the value of the booking transaction completed through our platform. We are not liable for: loss or damage to personal property left in or on a hired vehicle; personal injury arising during the rental period; delays, cancellations, or service failures by the vehicle supplier; ZTL fines or parking penalties incurred during the rental; mechanical failure of the vehicle; or any consequential, indirect, or incidental losses arising from the use of a rented vehicle.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded under Italian law or the European Consumer Rights Directive.
Our platform and all content are provided on an "as is" basis. While we make every effort to ensure that vehicle listings, pricing, and availability information are accurate and up to date, we do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses. It is your responsibility to maintain appropriate security on your own devices.
8. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution
These Terms of Service are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Italian Republic, including the Italian Civil Code (Codice Civile), the Italian Consumer Code (Codice del Consumo, Legislative Decree 206/2005), and applicable European Union regulations including the EU Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU.
Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms that cannot be resolved amicably shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts of Rome (Tribunale di Roma), Italy, unless mandatory consumer protection law in your country of residence requires otherwise.
EU residents have the right to use the European Commission's Online Dispute Resolution platform for contractual disputes arising from online transactions. The ODR platform is accessible at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr. Our contact email for ODR purposes is info@romecarrent.com.
Before initiating any formal dispute process, we encourage you to contact our team directly. The majority of concerns related to car hire bookings in Rome - including billing queries, cancellation disputes, or supplier complaints - can be resolved efficiently through direct communication.
